KELOWNA RIDING CLUB (KRC)
History
The Kelowna Riding Club has roots in the local equestrian scene dating back to at least the late 20th century. Historical records indicate that the Okanagan Polo Club, formed in 1986, initially held matches at the KRC grounds before relocating to a nearby field on Benvoulin Road and later to Bulman Road in 2003 due to urban development. Polo activities in the Okanagan region trace even further to the early 20th century, with clubs in nearby areas such as Kamloops and Vernon, suggesting a longstanding equestrian tradition in the area. The club has evolved as a key facility for the Okanagan equestrian community, with community members contributing to its development over generations. In recent years, it navigated challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, reopening on June 1, 2020, under strict health protocols aligned with British Columbia Health Authority and Equestrian Canada guidelines. The club has also received support from sponsors, including Horse Council British Columbia, for facility improvements.
Mission and Values
The KRC's mission centers on creating a supportive, positive environment where horses are regarded as companions and partners, enabling riders to engage in equestrian activities safely and enjoyably. Core values include inclusivity across disciplines, diversity, community involvement, and a commitment to horse welfare. As a volunteer-driven organization with minimal staff, it relies on member participation for operations, maintenance, and events. Safety is prioritized through rules, such as symptom checks during the pandemic era, social distancing in arenas, and the provision of first aid kits and sanitization stations. The club promotes education and growth in equestrian sports, adhering to standards from bodies like Equestrian Canada and Horse Council BC (HCBC).
